Support & frequently asked questions

Short, practical answers to the questions readers ask us most often.

General questions

Start here if you are new to comparing mobile carriers.

Is Signalho Insights a mobile carrier?

No. We are an independent informational portal. We do not sell phone service, SIM cards, or devices. We provide explanations, glossaries, and comparison frameworks so that readers can make better-informed decisions when they sign up with an actual carrier.

How is the site funded?

Signalho Insights is funded by display advertising and, in some sections, affiliate links to third-party comparison tools. Affiliate links are disclosed where they appear. Our editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers — see our editorial standards below.

Do you collect personal information?

We collect only what is necessary to operate the website. See our Privacy Policy for the full list of data categories, retention periods, and the rights available to U.S. residents.

Can you recommend a specific carrier for me?

No. Carrier quality depends heavily on your address, daily routine, and usage profile. Our guides help you ask the right questions, but we deliberately avoid blanket "best carrier" recommendations because they would be misleading.

Plans & billing

Everything that ends up on a phone bill.

What is the difference between prepaid and postpaid?

With prepaid, you pay for service before each monthly cycle and the carrier does not perform a credit check. With postpaid, you receive service first and pay afterward; most postpaid plans require a credit check and offer device financing. Prepaid is usually cheaper, postpaid usually offers more perks.

Why is my first bill higher than the advertised price?

The first bill commonly includes a prorated month plus the upcoming month, plus one-time activation or SIM fees, plus taxes and regulatory surcharges. Many carriers also bill the device financing on the first invoice. By the third cycle, the bill typically settles into a predictable amount.

What is data deprioritization?

Most "unlimited" plans include a priority threshold, often in the range of 30–100 GB. After you exceed it, your traffic still works but yields to higher-priority customers when a cell tower is congested. In practice that usually means slower speeds during evening hours in busy locations.

Can I keep my current phone if I switch carriers?

Generally yes, if the phone is unlocked and supports the new carrier's network bands. Most flagship phones sold in the U.S. in recent years are compatible with all three networks, but it is worth confirming compatibility before activating service.

What happens to my phone number when I switch?

You can usually "port" your number to the new carrier. Keep the old line active during the port — once the port completes, the old line cancels automatically. Do not cancel your current service before porting, or the number may be lost.

Devices & eSIM

How hardware fits into the picture.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM that is built into the device rather than a removable plastic card. It is activated by scanning a QR code or installing a profile. Most modern smartphones support both a physical SIM and an eSIM, often at the same time (dual SIM).

Is buying a phone outright better than financing?

Buying outright eliminates monthly device payments and the soft commitment they create, which can give you more flexibility to switch carriers. Financing spreads cost over 24–36 months but ties you to that carrier — leaving early usually means paying off the device balance.

Will I lose my data if I move my SIM to a new phone?

No. Your phone number and carrier plan are tied to the SIM, not the device. Photos, apps, and accounts are tied to the phone or to a cloud account (iCloud, Google). Always back up your phone before swapping devices.
